MMT, also known as methylcyclopentadienyl tricarbonylmanganese, is a manganese based gasoline antiknock additive with excellent performance and high cost-effectiveness. It is mainly used in refining enterprises, providing a simple, effective, and low-cost measure to improve the octane number (gasoline grade) of lead-free gasoline. The application of MMT is beneficial for the rational utilization of petroleum resources. The octane number of gasoline is increased, making gasoline combustion more complete and significantly reducing energy consumption. Therefore, MMT is a fuel additive with significant energy-saving and emission reduction effects.
Methylcyclopentadienyl tricarbonyl manganese (MMT) is a gasoline antiknock additive. After combustion, MMT decomposes into active manganese oxide particles. Its surface effect can destroy the peroxides already generated in vehicle engines and reduce the concentration of peroxides. Meanwhile, a portion of the chain reaction is selectively interrupted. This can hinder automatic ignition, reduce the rate of energy release, and improve the antiknock ability of the fuel.
The gasoline antiknock additive produced by Orthoil is MMT 62. Its physicochemical properties are shown in the table below.

The characteristics of methylcyclopentadienyl tricarbonyl manganese (MMT) are as follows:
(1) Good combustibility
It can increase engine power, solve the problem of insufficient kinetic power of vehicle caused by MTBE overload, and save fuel.
(2) High benefit of manganese agent
When added at 100 ppm, the manganese content does not exceed 18mg/L, and this can increase the octane number of gasoline by 2-3.
(3) No Side Effect
This has no adverse effects on other properties of the fuel.
(4) Good compatibility
It can be used together with other blending agents such as MTBE and ethanol.
(5) Improvement of refining operations
This can improve refining operations, enhance the flexibility of mixed operations, and reduce the difficulty of restructuring.
(6) Improvement of exhaust gas
MMT has effectively improved the catalytic converter of vehicle exhaust during the combustion, reducing the emissions of harmful substances in vehicle exhaust, for example, components such as nitrogen oxides and carbon monoxide.
Operation Instruction
1. Packaging: Galvanized iron drums, IBC drums, or ISO cans are used for packaging.
2. Transportation: International Maritime Organization (IMO). The International Maritime Dangerous Goods Regulations should be followed.
3. Storage
Store the container in a cool, dry, and well ventilated place, away from heat sources/sparks/open flames. Processing and mixing temperature: -25 ℃~50 ℃. Quality guarantee period: 12 months.
Keep the container sealed. If not in use, it is more advantageous to store using inert gases (such as nitrogen).
Due to the photosensitivity of MMT, its samples or gasoline samples must be stored in opaque containers.
MMT should be avoided from contact with eyes, skin, and ingestion as it belongs to the toxic category.
